Rio Rincon and Casa Orquidea, Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica
Morning found us anchored in the calm waters of Golfo Dulce and the conditions for sea kayaking were immaculate. Enthusiasm ran high as we loaded our intrepid voyagers from the stern of the Sea Voyager into the sea kayaks. Like pods from a mother ship, the fleet departed for a close encounter with the mangrove-lined canals of Rio Rincon. Meanwhile, Zodiac cruises and nature walks on a local gravel road yielded sloths, toucans, ibis and a parade of colorful tanagers and hummingbirds.
We repositioned in the afternoon at stone’s throw distance from Casa Orquidea, a well-manicured and pristine private garden, sandwiched between the waters and forested hills of Golfo Dulce. Though we were accompanied by dark clouds and the traditional afternoon showers of the tropics, our stroll along the blossoms, palms, heliconia and orchids was magnificent. The rain brightened every single leaf, every single flower. The shiny gloss made it hard to believe such exuberance exists!
Needless to say, each day brings forth unforgettable experiences, which can only be matched by the attentive staff aboard the Sea Voyager. Our complete immersion into the richest habitats of the planet is always the topic of discussion at the end of the day. With drinks in hand, we share tales of wildlife and tomorrow’s snorkeling opportunities in Panama’s Coiba National Park and ponder at the thought that we perhaps saw more birds at the garden than plants!
