Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica
Today the early risers were in their element!! Our Expedition Leader woke us up at 6:00 a.m., but she knows that this is the time when the wildlife comes out. They do not like hot weather! We went ashore before breakfast onto Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the most popular parks in Costa Rica because of its sandy beaches and pleasant feeling.
We split up in two groups one long and one shorter hike. As we were going up the trail in Cathedral Point, the highest point in the park, right on time, a group of white-throated capuchin monkeys came our way. A sloth was sleeping away on the treetops, a coatimundi came down to the ground looking for food, and several agoutis crossed our path, were we right to come out this early. We went back on board for breakfast.
Out we went into the sunny sand and the warm waters of the park. Some of us decided to stay on the beach, while others chose to take another hike with our naturalists. At least six sloths, one directly above our heads, and some more monkeys were spotted! Swimming was just as great!
As we left the beach, hopping on the Zodiacs, a raccoon came to bid us farewell. What a wonderful day to start our trip!
