Bartolome & Santiago Islands

After an early wakeup call we all found our way to the island of Bartolome. The prospect of 359 steps at six o’clock in the morning was a bit much to handle, but we all braced ourselves and started our journey up Bartolome. Though the stairs were rough and many, we all made it to the top. In the end it was all worth it. The view from the top was spectacular. It was as if you could see every island in the Galapagos from there. It was one of the most breathtaking experiences of my life.

After a well-deserved breakfast, we went on a glass bottom boat ride. We got the chance to see all types of fish without having to even get in the water. There were many types of Parrot fish and sea stars. We also got see some penguins. They didn’t swim under the boat but they did cross our path as we traveled around Pinnacle Rock.

In the afternoon, we got the chance to snorkel and finally see a sea turtle up close. It was amazing to be able to watch him eat the algae and still be so close to him. The lack of fear is so amazing and even though this is probably the hundredth organism we have seen this week it still is amazing to see how unafraid they all are. After snorkeling we went for a walk around Puerto Egas. The landscape was beautiful and there were so many things to be seen. It was the perfect end to a perfect week. I wish I never had to leave. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything in the world.
