Floreana Island

The albino sea lion is back!

Today, early in the morning, we visited Post Office Bay. Around this historical location there is a stunning volcanic landscape. Intriguing lava flows that have reached the ocean, not a long time ago, are now partially covered with water. Several groups of Galapagos sea lions perform their daily routines on the lava flows and on the already formed white beaches. “La Lobería”, the wolves’ place, is the Spanish name given to this small but beautiful location. In Ecuador sea lions are called “lobos marinos”, for us these beloved sea mammals do not roar like lions, but bark and howl like wolves.

Almost a year ago, on August 9th, an incredible finding was made. It was reported that a baby sea lion was just born. It was not a regular baby; it was an albino one! Since then I have been sending regular updates about this creature through our web site. It is very rewarding to know that many people that log on daily to our site are expecting news about “Lobito”. Well, today I have good news. After several months without seeing the baby, we found her today together alongside her mother. It was extremely exciting to see the albino again. It was seen leading a normal sea lion life, sleeping with her mom, being nursed. We even saw the albino baby walking along with her mom. I am happy to report that the baby albino has a healthy appearance and is growing at a normal rate. I will never forget how attentive and loving her mother was towards her today. It was sincerely touching.
