Fernandina Island
It is wonderful to have advance knowledge of the tides, sunset and sunrise times, and about the moon’s cycle. One can then program the day with the enjoyment of working out the best combination of these details.
To see the sunrise we woke up at 6:08 am, because our star was going to show its first rays at 6:09 am. But if we missed the rise, we still knew that the sun would set down at 6:16 pm. Both are equally important events for our planet earth!
The iguanas were going to be having breakfast around 9:30 am because the tide table showed low tide at that time. Seaweed is easily reachable, so the iguanas do not even have to dive to get it. We understood that the snorkeling around 11:00 am was promising too, because the seas were going to calm down, so sea turtles would also be feeding on algae.
The Equator line was going to be in its best colors, pink and green, around 2:30 pm, therefore we crossed the equator at that time.
We also knew that the Zodiac ride at 4:30 pm was going to be excellent because the tide was going to start to go out, exposing again the many barnacles and shells that live in the ash and lava layers of Punta Vicente Roca.
But it is better when you count on known facts together with very unexpected ones. And we didn’t know that we were going to see penguins mating in the water, or a flightless cormorant swallowing a moray eel in front of us, or blue-footed boobies in a feeding frenzy!
