Española Island
We have the pleasure of sharing this week’s trip with Michael Jackson. A past Galapagos guide, he is just as famous here as his performing name’s sake. His excellent Galapagos guidebook is used by many, including the guides.
Practically everyone got to see the splendors of Española Island at it’s grandest today. The blue-footed booby’s eggs are hatching and the albatrosses are in abundance. The wind not only cooled us considerably, enabling us extra time on the island without us over-heating, but it also provided the albatrosses with the lift necessary to fly all around us, putting on a fantastic display. When we moved on from their cliff-top stage, we were afforded a precious view of their two-week old chicks (see photo).
These chicks will soon endure the long waits between mealtimes as their parents pop down to Peru, a thousand miles away, to feed on carefully selected fish. This journey can leave the chicks waiting up to two weeks for their rich, fish-oil meal, but they are sometimes fed up to 2kg of it in one go!
The afternoon tempted our guests into the water for snorkeling. For several of them, it was their first time exploring this exciting new world.
