Bartolome Island

T’was a blustery day with hats flying into the water. The morning’s walkers earned a good breakfast after their climb to the summit. The rest crawled out of bed after the previous night’s folkloric dancing.

In the water, however, the blowing didn’t affect our snorkelers as they swam on to a surprise encounter with a penguin. We did expect to see penguins, but this individual was climbing on top of the guests, tapping them on the mask with it’s beak and even tried to eat the video camera, as can be seen in the photo. He stayed around for a while, somersaulting in the water, before joining some colleagues out on a fishing expedition.

Whilst our penguin spectacle was taking place in the water, some of us in the glass-bottom boat were also fortunate enough to witness a sea lion throwing up. “What’s so exciting about a sea lion performing reverse peristalsis?” I hear you ask. Well, this one threw up two whole spotted snake eels. Apart from our once in a lifetime sea lion observation, we were able to identify the eels at a close proximity. What a lucky day!

The beautiful afternoon started with a trip back in time to hear tales of pirates, whalers and buccaneers. Our walk along the dramatic coastline of Puerto Egas, James Island, afforded a view of a spouting whale for some, a new born sealion pup for others. We all had to avoid stepping on the straddled marine iguanas, as they blended in so well with the lava. The beauty, temperature, colors and tranquility of this walk created a wonderful serenity experienced not to be forgotten by many of us.
