With following seas and a clear horizon, it was a superb day for sea-watching from the outer decks. Keen birders gathered on the bow to get rare close-up views of highly pelagic seabirds. The bird theme continued when, at sunset, we witnessed an astonishing abundance of sooty shearwaters as they readied themselves for their nightly return to land on the Snares Islands (all two million of them!).
For as long as he can remember, Conor has always been preoccupied with the natural world, from the whales to the fungi. For most of his life he has been an islander: growing up in Cobh, Ireland and settling down in Tobermory in the Hebrides, Scotland...
An homage to Kaikoura and National Geographic Orion ’s departure from the South Island, in three haikus. The morning began in dramatic fashion as National Geographic Orion entered the North Bay of Kaikōura, with a stunning skyscape and a glorious rainbow to welcome us. This was the first stop of our expedition that falls on a mainland island of New Zealand. Prior to today, all our activities have taken place on or around the smaller and more remote Subantarctic islands. Kaikōura was first settled by the Māori peoples around 1600, and it wasn’t until over 200 years later that Europeans had an influence here. Today, Kaikōura is known for its quaint coastal community, abundant seafood, and a rich array of wildlife. Today’s focus provided a wonderful extensive tour of the peninsula and surrounding area and gave our guests the opportunity to take in the town, local historical museum, and to explore the local trails.
National Geographic Orion has gotten into the holiday spirit! Our insanely talented pastry chef, Joseph, constructed the most elaborate gingerbread village the world has ever seen. Pyrotechnics and all! A week’s worth of love put into this amazing display cannot go unnoticed. The family atmosphere onboard is creating a magical holiday spirit.
