José Guerrero

An Ecuadorian anthropologist, educator and photographer, José was born and raised in the Galápagos. His connection to the islands spans generations: his mother was born in the highlands of San Cristóbal, and his grandfather was among the first generation of teachers in the archipelago. Growing up in this unique environment helped shape his interests in culture, conservation and the relationship between people and nature.

José became a Galápagos naturalist guide in 2008 and has spent much of his career helping visitors better understand the islands' unique natural and cultural heritage. In 2013, he received an Australia Awards Scholarship, which enabled him to pursue a master's degree in Anthropology and Environment at the Australian National University in Canberra. His research examining the relationship between humans and Galápagos sea lions received first prize at the International Symposium of Natural Resources and Society in Hanover, Germany.

Throughout his career, José has represented the Galápagos at international events in Ireland, Australia, Canada, India, Bolivia and Germany. Within the islands, he has worked with the Charles Darwin Foundation, the Galápagos National Park Directorate, WWF and the Galápagos Governing Council on projects related to sustainable development and community-based conservation.

Since joining National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions in 2015, José has become a certified photo instructor and field educator. Since 2025, he has also served on the coordination team for National Geographic Photo Camp, helping teach photography and storytelling to local students. Today, he combines his work as a naturalist and educator with family life and his role in a family-run tourism business on San Cristóbal Island.
